Tomoko Sauvage: Waterbowls
Two workshops and a concert for children by Tomoko Sauvage at Tokyo’s Institut Français on August 21.
The internationally-recognised Japanese performer’s sound class, called ‘Waterbowls,’ will introduce pupils of ages 6 to 9, and 10 to 15 to a ‘natural synthesiser’ assembly of hydrophones (underwater microphones) and water-filled porcelains bowls of her own design to generate a unique sonic experience.
Each workshop, developed especially for children, will take its young participants on a voyage through unknown sounds, where waves of water are stirred, shifting in tonality, and changing according to liquid volume. Tiny droplets hit the porcelain in percussive rhythm. Derived from a traditional South Indian instrument called the Jalatharangam, Sauvage’s addition of hydrophones makes it something else that evokes a unique meditative space through acoustics.
Imaginative music with a calming and familial nature, the water bowls will take the children into a world that’s full of surprises. There will be listening sessions of these underwater soundscapes, as well as lessons on the creative process of composing and audio piece using materials they discover throughout the workshop. Following that, Sauvage herself will perform a concert at 7pm, where water, sound, and light become one.
Parents with children between ages 6 and 9 and 10 and 15 are invited to experience this special occasion, made possible by a collaboration between artist Tomoko Sauvage and her ‘Waterbowls’ participants.
